The Republican Party, referred to as the GOP (for "Grand Old Party") emerged in the early 1800s to combat the expansion of slavery in the United States. There have been eighteen Republican Presidents of the United States of America; see below for a list of who these Republican Presidents were. Several of these presidents, like Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt, are regarded as great U.S. Presidents; whereas others like Richard M. Nixon are usually included in the list of worst U.S. Presidents.
