- The Republican Party is the second oldest existing political party in the U.S.; the Democratic Party has been around longer.
- The first Republican to run for president was John C. Fremont in 1856; he lost the presidential election.
- The first Republican President was Abraham Lincoln who is usually considered the best U.S. President and is also unfortunately famous for being the first U.S. President to be assassinated. The Republican Party is often called the Party of Lincoln.
- Three Republican Presidents have been assassinated; Abraham Lincoln in 1865, James A. Garfield in 1881, and William McKinley in 1901. The only other U.S President assassinated was John F. Kennedy, a member of the Democratic Party, in 1963.
- Lincoln was the first president to have a beard while serving as President.
- Although several U.S. Presidents served as soldiers during the American Civil War, Rutherford B. Hayes was the only one wounded in the war.
- Republican President Rutherford B. Hayes was the first U.S. President to use a telephone while serving as President. Alexander Graham Bell, who invented the telephone, installed a telephone in the White House in 1879.
- Benjamin Harrison was the grandson of the 9th President of the United States, William Henry Harrison.
- William H. Taft was the first president to own a car.
- Theodore Roosevelt was the first president to travel outside of the United States while serving as President. Roosevelt traveled to Panama in 1906.
- The Republican Party controlled the presidency in the 1920s starting on March 4th of 1921 with the presidency of Warren G. Harding, followed by Calvin Coolidge in 1923, and then by Herbert C. Hoover in 1929.
